Food Gathering

Heading 1

-Objective:

Heading 1

To be the first team to collect all 12 FoodGroup Flags from a specific food group. Note: for the leader this is a fun way of getting all the FoodGroup Flags organized for storage for the next time this game is played.

-Fundamental Movement Skills:

  • Locomotor

    • Dodge

    • Run

-Equipment List:

  • 5 sets of 12 FoodGroup Flags--Use only Fruit, Vegetables, Grain, and Protein

  • 6 Hula hoops

  • 5 plastic clamps to hold flags in place

-Equipment Link:

-Setting Up:

  • Place 1 hula hoop in the center of the playing area and then place the other hula hoops equal distance apart.

  • Place all of the FoodGroup Flags in the center hoop.

  • 3-4 players stand behind their assigned hula hoop and each team is assigned a food group.

-Instructions:

  • On the signal to begin the first player from each team runs to the center hoop and brings back a flag from their food group.

  • The first person tags the hand of the second player in line who goes to the center hoop and brings back a second flag of the same food group.

  • Continue till all the FoodGroup Flags are removed from the middle hoop and the team has all 12 of the FoodGroup Flags from a food group—first team to do so wins.

Variations

  • Do not specify a food group for any teams. So it two or more teams select the same food group then they will need to return FoodGroup Flags (one at a time) and then pick up one flag from a different food group.

    • Another variation on this game is that each team begins with an assortment of 12 FoodGroup Flags, decides which food group they plan to go for, and then return one flag at a time and pick one new flag at a time.

Queestions

-Questions & Notes:

  • Remind players to be careful when two or more players are selecting a flag from the center hoop so that they do not bang heads going down or coming up.

Questions for Understanding/Debriefing

  • What would it not be a good idea to only eat foods from one food group?
