Hot Box

Heading 1

-Objective:

Heading 1

For the player in the middle (in the hot box) to try to get to 1 of the bases safely.

-Fundamental Movement Skills:

  • Locomotor

    • Run​

  • Manipulative Send​

    • Throw​

  • Manipulative Receive​

    • Catch​

-Equipment List:

  • For teams of three players

    • Two gloves​

    • One ball

-Setting Up:

  • Put 2 bases 60 or 90 feet apart.

  • A player stands on each base one of them with a ball in hand.

  • The third player stands mid-way between the 2 players/bases.

-Instructions:

  • The player with the ball moves forward to try and tag the player in the middle.

  • The other base player moves closer to the player in the hot box.

  • If the player in the hot box has an opportunity to run base the base player without the ball she should do so.

  • If the player in the hot box is getting too close to passing the base player without the ball the base player with the ball throws the ball to the other base player.

  • The base players try to squeeze the player in the hot box into a smaller and smaller area without letting her get by and eventually tagging her.

  • Switch roles and see who can get safely to base the most often.

  • Safety considerations:

    • Players may slide into a base, make sure the sliding area is safe and free from any dangerous debris.

  • Instructional tips:

    • Defensively players should make as few throws as possible, fake throws, and run down the middle player when possible.

    • The player in the middle should try and force as many throws as possible (hoping for an errant throw), fake direction to force a throw, and try to avoid a tag when being chased.
