-Setting Up:

  • Place 6 or more participants on either side of the net.

  • Give each team 2 volleyballs.

-Instructions:

  • At the signal to begin, players with a ball throw the ball (underhand) over the net into the opponents court.

  • Players on the other side try to catch the ball; if they fail and the ball lands in the court the other team scores a point. If the ball is caught it can be thrown to another teammate (maximum of 2 passes per side) or thrown back over the net.

  • If the ball lands outside the court on a throw the receiving side scores a point. Players may not hold onto the ball for longer than 3 seconds.

  • Players may not hit the ball with any part of their body, but can hit another ball with a ball they happen to be holding–this does not count as a pass or throw.

  • Play till 25 points.

-Questions & Notes:

  • Safety considerations:

    • Encourage students to be aware of each other (heads up, call the balls they are going for) so they do not bump into each other.

  • Instructional tips:

    • Remind students to spread themselves out on defence to fill the court and to look for the open areas on offense to score.

  • Variations:

    • Mass-ball Shower Volleyball: To add to the confusion and fun use 6 or more balls. Scoring will go more quickly with more balls.

    • No-pass Shower Volleyball: Do not allow any passes. All caught balls must be thrown back over the net.

    • I Spy Shower Volleyball: Each team sends one of their teammates into the opposition’s court. If that player catches the ball his team scores a point. Do not allow any body-contact in this game or it could get rough.
