-Setting Up:

  • Establish a starting line and place a cone two paces from the starting line.

  • Have teams stand behind the starting line.

  • The front player is in a “crab walk” position, with her hands on the starting line, her back toward the cone, and her feet on the ball, waiting for the start of the relay.

  • To crab walk, a player sits on the floor and puts the back of her heels and calves on her ball and her hands on the floor. To move, she must lift up her buttocks, walk backward with her hands, and move her feet to keep them on top of the ball. This activity is excellent for strengthening arms, shoulders, abdomen, and legs.

-Instructions:

  • On your signal to begin, the first player in line crab walks her ball around the cone and back to the starting line.

  • When she touches the starting line with her hands, she stands up, picks up the ball, and places it under the feet of the second racer, who has her hands on the starting line and her back facing the cone, ready to race.

  • The second player races around the cone and back.

  • While the racers are on their way toward the cone and back, the rest of the players on the team do slow-speed jumping jacks and cheer their players on.

  • When the entire team has completed the race, the team sits down.

  • The team that completes the race and is seated first is the winner.

-Questions & Notes:

  • Adjust the distance from the starting line to the cone according to the overall ability of the group to do the crab walk.

  • Crab Walk Balance: Played the same as Crab Walk Relay except that the players’ feet are also on the ground and the ball is balanced on top of their bellies.
