-Setting Up:

  • Use no net and have the “cat” stand between the short-service lines.

  • The other 2 players stand on either side of the court.

  • Use a long narrow (half) court.

-Instructions:

  • One player serves an underhand clear to begin pay.

  • The cat tries to catch the bird while the 2 other players hit the bird over the cat.

  • When the cat intercepts the bird or a player makes a hit that goes out-of-bounds, the errant player changes places with the cat.

-Questions & Notes:

  • Safety considerations:

    • To avoid players striking each other with the racquet provide the cat with a pool noodle, or provide a safety line 1 metre back from the short service line that players may not enter with their bodies.

  • Instructional tips:

    • Encourage players to hit long and high clears.

  • Variations:

    • Cat Badminton:

      • Regular badminton rules but replacing the net with a cat(s) in the middle–between the two short-service lines.

      • The cat cannot intercept the serve (serve must go over imaginary net).

      • No drive shots or smashes permitted (for the safety of the cat) and bird must land behind the short service line.

      • Whoever losses the rally changes place with the cat(s).

  • As a cool-down

    • Would work great as a cool-down as is.
