Cat in the Middle

Two players hit continuous clears to each other that are high and deep enough to avoid the cat from intercepting the bird.

Each player has a badminton racquet (the cat in the middle could also use a pool noodle to make things safer), 1 bird per group of players

Use no net and have the “cat” stand between the short-service lines.
-
The other 2 players stand on either side of the court.
-
Use a long narrow (half) court.
-Instructions:
-
One player serves an underhand clear to begin pay.
-
The cat tries to catch the bird while the 2 other players hit the bird over the cat.
-
When the cat intercepts the bird or a player makes a hit that goes out-of-bounds, the errant player changes places with the cat.

Safety considerations:
-
To avoid players striking each other with the racquet provide the cat with a pool noodle, or provide a safety line 1 metre back from the short service line that players may not enter with their bodies.

Encourage players to hit long and high clears.

Variations:
-
Cat Badminton:
-
Regular badminton rules but replacing the net with a cat(s) in the middle–between the two short-service lines.

The cat cannot intercept the serve (serve must go over imaginary net).

No drive shots or smashes permitted (for the safety of the cat) and bird must land behind the short service line.

Whoever losses the rally changes place with the cat(s).
