Long Cross and Drop

-Objective:

See how long players can successfully pass the bird close to the back of the court (ideally between the double’s back-court service line and the end line) and close to the front of the court (between the short service line and the net).

  • Each player has a badminton racquet, 1 bird per pair of players​

-Setting Up:

  • One player stands at the net with a bird in hand while the other player stands on the other side of the net in the back opposite corner.

-Instructions:

  • Front player hits the bird cross-court and deep into opposite back corner.

  • Back player returns a drop-shot straight down the line.

  • Front player returns the bird cross-court and deep into opposite back corner.

  • Back player returns a drop-shot straight down the line.

  • See how long players can successfully complete this sequence.

    • Emphasize proper placement, trajectory, and speed of shots.

  • Variations:

    • There are many variations on Long Cross, Drop which include repeating the following sequences:

      • Long Cross, Drop, Drop

      • Short Cross, Drop, Drop

      • Short Cross, Drop, Short Cross, Drop

      • Long Cross, Clear, Drop 

    • Doubles: Each variation can also be played with pairs (one at the net the other at the back of the court). While pairs includes more people it reduces the movement of each player. 

  • As a cool-down

    • Each works well as a cool-down, particularly if the clears are high and not too many drop shots are used.
