Explain to the players that the objective of the game is to score more goals than your opponents.

Game begins and restarts after each goal with a face-off at centre.

Rules

• Body checking, roughing and high sticking all result in 2 minute running time penalties.

• High sticking occurs any time the stick is above the shoulders (before a shot, on the follow through, knocking a ball down, or when running with or without the ball).

• When there is a penalty the other team gets the ball at the place of infraction and a player must pass the ball to begin play.

In terms of the goalies:

• They are the only ones allowed in the goal crease.

• If a defensive player interferes with the ball in the crease a penalty shot is awarded—an offensive player gets the ball at the blue line is allowed to dribble in and take 1 shot on the goalie (if the shooter misses the goalie gets the ball and play continues).

• Goalies may use their hands and feet to stop a ball but must pass the ball with their stick.

• Players are not allowed to go offside

  • This is to prevent a player just standing around in their opponent’s end waiting for a pass from their end.

  • Offside occurs when a player is over the center line before the ball.

  • Their opponents take possession of the ball at the point of infraction.
