-Setting Up:

  • Designate 2 teams and identify them with different coloured swimming caps.

  • In a swimming pool, set up a basketball hoop at either end/side of a pool. All participants sit in an inner-tube on the edge of the pool by their basket.

-Instructions:

  • Play begins with the official throwing the ball into the middle of the pool.

  • Both teams paddle their inner tubes as quickly as possible to retrieve the ball.

  • Once a player has the ball he may not move with it and has 3 seconds to pass or shot the ball—failure to do so and the referee will blow her whistle and the offending player must give the ball to a player from the other team in his vicinity.

  • When a basket is scored, the team scored upon has 10 seconds to get their first pass away.

-Questions & Notes:

  • Safety Considerations

    • Must have a life guard present.

    • Competitors must be able to swim to participate.

    • If possible play the game in water that is approximately 1 yard (meter) deep so that someone who inadvertantly falls from their inner tube can safely get back on it.

  • Teaching Tips

    • In 1 yard (meter) deep water this game could also be played without inner tubes using the same rules as listed above.

    • For accomplished swimmers the game could also be played in deeper water where swimmers could not touch the bottom of the pool at any time.
