  • Give each team their inner tubes and have them get onto their tubes in the water each by their edge of the pool.

-Instructions:

  • Explain to competitors that the objective of the game is to score more points that their opponents. Goals count when the ball goes completely into the goal and when the shooter is on her tube (inner tube with the stems taped), the shooter is past center, and the ball has been contacted by 2 offensive players before the shot is taken.

  • The game is begun with the competitors touching the edge of the pool at their end, then the referee throws the ball into the middle of the pool. A game consists of 2 halves of 7 to 12 minutes with a 1 to 5 minute half-time break.

  • Rules

    • There are several rules to keep the game safe and fair.

    • Players are given a 1-minute penalty when they push off the bottom of the pool, hold or overturn an opponent’s tube, and use a closed fist in an attempt to punch the ball.

    • A penalty shot is awarded for a foul within 4 yards (meters) of the goal which prevents a sure goal.

  • Teaching Tips

    • If you have a lot of students and equipment and not much space try playing Multi-ball Inner Tube Water Polo in which you would have more competitors in the pool at 1 time using 2 or 3 balls at the same time.
